Paralyzing the privatization of the Post Office would be a big mistake, according to Gesner Oliveira, a professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and a partner at GO Associados.
“It would be a big mistake to paralyze the privatization of the Post Office, which should have taken place several decades ago, because it could have a more efficient service and free up resources for the State to focus on what is fundamental, which are social programs, security, education and health. ”, said the specialist this Saturday to CNN 🇧🇷
The transition team announced this Friday that one of its priorities will be to end the proposal to privatize the Post Office, which is currently being discussed in the Federal Senate, and announced that it has a meeting scheduled with the state-owned company on Tuesday.
“There has already been an analysis of the constitutionality (of the privatization), precisely in the process that led to the majority vote on this project in the Chamber, and it was verified that it is possible to privatize the Post Office, as several other countries have already done”, said Gesner Oliveira when asked about the argument of privatization critics that it would be an unconstitutional process.
One of the critics’ concerns is about the universalization of the service, but Gesner argues that it is an easily resolved issue.
“In a privatization process, it would be interesting to establish rules so that services to distant, less populated areas do not fail to be provided. This can be regulated by an independent agency, as provided for in a project approved by the Chamber. No politicization and no danger of corruption,” he said.
