Glittering and golden, the star system has only the appearance. After all, Hollywood and the like they are nothing more than a mirror – better dressed and made up – of the society in which we all live. And in the society we all live in it is still a fact that women earn less than men.
The “gender pay gap” (as the difference in wages between women and men is called) is a widespread problem and far from being overcome: nhe EU now stands at around 13%, and has changed only minimally over the past decade. There are no exceptions: even big and acclaimed actresses generally earn much less compared to their male partners, even when they work together on a film. To confirm it is also Priyanka Chopra Jonasperhaps the most famous Bollywood actress as well as Miss World 2000 and wife of Nick Jonas dei Jonas Brothers.
In a BBC interview, the actress and activist has revealed that she has never achieved “equal pay” in all the years she has worked in Bollywood, despite the dozens of films interpreted and having become a star of the highest level. Not only for the roles played: Priyanka Chopra Jonas has not limited herself to work on the big screen, but has used her notoriety to convey important messages, even becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and appearing in the list of the British broadcaster of the one hundred inspiring and influential women from around the world.
The BBC has posted on its website a short excerpt from an extensive interview with the Indian star, due to air next year. In this clip, the actress focuses precisely on the problem of the gender gap. “I’ve done 60 movies, I think, but I’ve never been paid as much as my male co-star,” she says. In the interview Priyanka also recalled how men were treated differently on the sets of Bollywood «I thought it was completely normal to sit for hours on set while my male co-star took his time and showed up on set every time it was time to shoot.», said the former Miss World.
Today, however, things are starting to go differently. Priyanka revealed that she just received, for the first time ever, compensation equal to that of her business partner: it happened for his role in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming sci-fi spy series Citadel, in which the Indian actress worked side by side with the actor from game of Thrones Richard Madden.
