Tens of thousands of people are expected on its streets London for a course in her favor Palestinewhich will take place under tight police security as this weekend coincides with World War I Armistice Day.
Just over a month after the deadly attack by the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas against Israel, which responded by massively bombing the Gaza Stripthe protesters, who were already present en masse in previous weekends in the capital, are calling for a ceasefire.
The organization of this march against the government’s opinion developed into a political crisis. Interior Minister Suella Braverman now faces charges for questioning the neutrality of the police, who refused to ban the demonstration.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has warned London’s police chief Mark Rowley that he will hold him “responsible” for any incidentsparticularly if protesters disrupt the Armistice Day commemorations scheduled to run alongside the demonstration in the capital.
“Those who wish to protest may do so in honor of those who fought for this country and for the freedom we enjoy, but they must do so respectfully and peacefully.”Downing Street recalled in a statement issued yesterday, Friday, evening.
The route of the march, which is expected to start at noon local time (14:00 Greek time), carefully avoids the district of Whitehall, where the main commemorative event is to take place in the presence of, among others, the Prime Minister.
The police announced that a massive police force of nearly 2,000 officers would be deployed to ensure the safety of the ceremonies and the demonstration.
London’s police chief of operations, Laurence Taylor, who is predicting more than 100,000 protesters, said this weekend would be “particularly tense and difficult”.
He expects counter-protesters, including hooligans, to come, increasing the risk of clashes.
An exclusion zone has been set up around the site of the Armistice Day events and police will use enhanced powers to control protesters.
Interior Minister Suella Braverman called these demonstrations “marchs of hate” and claimed that some of the organizers “have relations with terrorist organizations, including Hamas.”
Braverman drew a lot of criticism after she publicly accused the police of “double standards” in their handling of the protests, leading some to call for her removal from government.
