Pro-Russian separatists claim to have captured the Ukrainian city of Lyman

Pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have claimed control of the city of Liman in the Donetsk region.

So far, pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk have “liberated and gained full control of 220 areas, including Krasny Liman, with supportive fire from Russian forces,” the separatist forces’ headquarters said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

The Ukrainian army has not yet confirmed the fall of the city.

However, Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksay Arestovich said on television last night that Ukrainian forces had lost control of this strategically important city.

The port is located west of the cities of Severodonetsk and Lisichansk, which are still controlled by the Ukrainian army. Russian forces have been trying to invade the area in recent weeks.
