Pro-Trump lawyer who helped craft 2020 election conspiracy pleads guilty

Kenneth Chesebro, a lawyer aligned with donald trump who helped devise the false electoral conspiracy in 2020, is pleading guilty in the case of electoral subversion in Georgia .

The plea deal is another major victory for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who charged Trump and 18 others in the effort to overturn the results of the Presidential elections 2020. On Thursday (19), Trump’s former campaign lawyer, Sidney Powell also pleaded guilty .

Chesebro is pleading guilty to one crime – conspiracy to file false documents. Fulton County prosecutors are recommending that Chesebro serve five years of probation and pay $5,000 in restitution. He agreed to testify in any future trials in the sprawling election subversion case and to write a letter of apology.

The statement came shortly after the start of jury selection this Friday (20). Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee met with the group of potential jurors Friday and told them the trial could last four to five months.

A source familiar with the discussions said the likelihood of Chesebro accepting a plea deal increased after co-defendant Sidney Powell made a surprise U-turn and pleaded guilty Thursday, leaving Chesebro as the only defendant whose trial was scheduled to begin Friday.

A lawyer who worked to undermine the results of the 2020 election, Chesebro helped develop the Trump campaign’s plan to introduce unauthorized lists of Republican voters in Georgia and six other states (in previous court filings, Chesebro’s lawyers have denied that he has drawn up the plan).

Chesebro and other Trump allies hoped that former Vice President Mike Pence would use GOP voters to justify Congress’s delay in certifying Joe Biden’s victory — or even expel Biden’s legal voters and acknowledge the fake Biden lists. Republican Party on January 6, 2021.

Chesebro was originally charged with seven felonies, including violating Georgia’s RICO (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) law, conspiracy to commit forgery and conspiracy to impersonate a public official.

Powell, a former Trump campaign lawyer, pleaded guilty Thursday in the racketeering case. The Georgia-based bail bondsman, Scott Hall, pleaded guilty in late September.

As part of the plea deal reached between prosecutors and Powell’s lawyers, she admitted her role in the January 2021 election systems breach in rural Coffee County, Georgia.

Prosecutors recommended a sentence of six years of probation, as well as $9,000 in restitution. Powell is also expected to write a letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia.

Powell pleaded guilty to six felonies – six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties – a significant reduction from the seven felonies she initially faced.

Before the trial, Chesebro and Powell lost several bids to have the case dismissed, including earlier this week. In a series of pretrial rulings, McAfee rejected arguments that Fulton County prosecutors misapplied Georgia’s RICO law and that the prosecution failed to establish key elements of the crimes they were charged with.
