The adaptation of “One Hundred Years of Solitude ” arrived in series format in the catalog of Netflix on Wednesday (11). With eight episodes, the first part of the series — which will have 16 chapters in total — attempts to adapt the novel written by Gabriel García Márquez .
The work, which was originally published in 1967, had never been made into a series or film until then. Netflix is the first studio to manage, with the approval of the writer’s family, to adapt the book that is considered one of the greatest works of Latin American literature.
One of the conditions of García Márquez’s children — who served as executive producers of the adaptation — was that “One Hundred Years of Solitude” would have “as many episodes as necessary” so that it would be possible to tell the story of the Buendía family, which passes through generations throughout the years. hundred years portrayed in the novel.
Furthermore, it was required that the entire work be recorded in Colombia, in Spanish and with the majority of the team made up of Colombians and Latin Americans.
In order for this to be created in the way the author would like and to do justice to the material, the series’ production team visited 11 cities and 32 villages in Colombia to build the magical city of Macondo.
During this trip, the team decided to hold a casting call that was open to everyone – even those who had no experience in acting. In addition to the 30 people in the family, 80 supporting actors were also cast.
According to the material released by Netflix, around 10 thousand profiles were analyzed to compose the cast.
“The search yielded a cast that is practically all Colombian, except for the characters that are presented as foreigners in the book, such as Pietro Crespi and Melquíades,” explained the streaming service.
“By the end of the first part, the production called on extras and stunt doubles approximately 10,000 times. Along with more than one hundred members of the main cast, they represent the ethnic, cultural and racial diversity of Colombia”, summarized the production of the Netflix series.
