Project makes a free bike tour of São Paulo; see how to participate

It is not difficult to find a group of bikers on Avenida Paulista or in the center of São Paulo, all lined up, properly dressed in vests and protected by helmets, normally on Saturdays and Sundays. Leading this group, monitors with loudspeakers give real classes on the most famous spots in the capital.

If you’ve already been curious about the scene to find out what it’s about – or what to do to participate -, CNN delivers: the name of the project is “Conheça São Paulo Pedalando”, by the company Bike Tour SP, by the brothers Daniel and André Moral .

The tours have been taking place since 2013 free of charge and the only requirement is the donation of 2kg of food, which are destined for two NGOs: the Bezerra de Menezes Assistance Center (NABEM) and Missão Cena, which takes care of vulnerable people in the region of Cracoland.

Since the beginning, the project has taken more than 70 thousand people to visit the city and collected almost 100 tons of food.

Previously carried out on six routes – including Vila Madalena and Parque do Ibirapuera – today, with the pandemic and loss of some sponsors, it operates on two: Avenida Paulista and Centro Novo in the city.

While the first lasts around 1h30 and passes through points such as MASP, Gazeta and Conjunto Nacional, the second lasts 2 hours and makes a circuit passing by Theatro Municipal and Copan until reaching the Museum of the Portuguese Language.

While pedaling, cyclists listen through a speaker to the most important information from those points in guided audio, complemented by monitors. There is an option in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in the center, and in the first two, in Paulista. A pound translation for those with this need is also available.

Wesley Alves, coordinator of Bike Tour SP, has been with the company since 2014 and has seen its expansion up close. For him, the best part of the tour is getting to know the city through the eyes of a São Paulo native.

“It’s not just a bike ride, but a cultural ride. We see details that even those who have lived here for a long time do not notice. They are peaceful paths, guided by our monitors. 90% of them are done on cycle lanes. All bicycles are sanitized, as are the accessories. So, it’s just a matter of arriving at our meeting points and enjoying it”, he emphasizes.

If you prefer, you can even choose a tricycle – there is only one unit and it is ideal for families with small children. For people with special needs or with reduced mobility, trains on both routes, directed by employees, are available. And there are also bicycles with car seats available.

To guarantee your place, it is necessary to enter the project’s website and choose which route to take. The Avenida Paulista tour takes place on Sundays at four times: 9 am, 10:30 am, 2 am and 1:30 pm. The Centro Novo ones are held on Saturdays, at 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.

“Our biggest objective is to return with all our routes next year. We are looking for new sponsors and partners to make even more people get to know São Paulo in a different way: cycling and helping those in need”, concludes Wesley.
