Promises from Turkey’s opposition: If we win the elections, the country will return to a parliamentary regime

The presidential elections, in which President Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years, is running for re-election, will be held together with the parliamentary elections.

THE Recep Tayyip Erdoganwho was originally prime minister from 2003 to 2014, became president in August 2014, elected for the first time by direct universal suffrage, and was re-elected in 2018. In 2017, a constitutional revision greatly expanded his powers.

The opposition promises, as reported by the Athens News Agency citing the Turkish media, if elected, that the revision of the constitution will be submitted to the parliament, which will have to approve it with a two-thirds majority – 400 votes out of 600 deputies.

The opposition also says it wants to repeal presidential decrees, which Erdogan has regularly used to fire high-ranking officials, including the governor of the central bank, or to denounce in 2021 the Istanbul Convention, which mandates the prosecution of those who they commit violence against women.

The president will no longer even be able to veto a law being debated by parliamentbut he will be able to refer this law to the deputies, if he wants to question it.

The National Alliance also promises that any prosecution against a political party aimed at banning it should have the green light of parliament.

Finally, in a symbolic decision, the National Alliance promises the return of the presidency to the historic Cankaya presidential palace. Erdogan built a presidential palace with more than 1,100 rooms on a hill outside Ankara, which was inaugurated in 2014 and includes a mosque, library and winter garden.
