Prosecutor asks Justice that Petrópolis vacate schools that have become shelters

The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ) asked justice, this Wednesday (23), that the Petrópolis City Hall vacate the municipal schools used as shelters in the municipality so that all students return to classrooms. .

According to the city hall, this Wednesday, students from 56 schools and 36 early childhood education centers returned to classrooms, following the sanitary protocols against Covid-19.

Since the February 15th tragedy, 13 educational institutions in the municipality have sheltered hundreds of residents who lost their homes because of the storms.

In the request, the MP also requests that the Municipal Secretary of Education present, within 48 hours, an emergency plan to replace school activities that have ceased to be applied since the beginning of the school year. The MP fears that the occupation of schools by homeless people will cause irreversible damage to education and that students will not reach the goal set by basic education, of 200 school days.

The document also highlights that the schools do not have an adequate structure to accommodate the homeless and determines for the city hall a period of 15 days for the schools to be vacated by the homeless, under the daily penalty of R$ 10 thousand for the municipality.
