Prosecutor who assaulted colleague is arrested in SP, says governor

The governor of São Paulo, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), reported on his Twitter that prosecutor Demétrius Oliveira de Macedo was arrested this Thursday (23).

The prosecutor was recorded beating his colleague Gabriela Samadello Monteiro de Barros in the municipality of Registro, in the interior of São Paulo.

This Wednesday (22), Judge Raphael Ernane Neves, of the First Criminal Court of the Registry Office, in the interior of São Paulo, decreed the preventive detention.

In a video circulating on social media, Demétrius Oliveira de Macedo is seen throwing punches at Gabriela. The recording also shows that a second employee is pushed against a door while trying to contain the man.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday morning (23), while the aggressor was still at large, prosecutor Gabriela Samadello commented that only the arrest would bring some tranquility after the episode of violence. Samadello, however, reinforces that the understanding of justice on the seriousness of the case is fundamental.

“If it is not understood that he actually tried to kill me – which I think that is what actually happened – he could be released and I will continue to be afraid. I understand that penalties that restrict the law, fines… alternative penalties to imprisonment are for people who are able to live in society”, commented the prosecutor.

Also according to Samadello, this was not the colleague’s first violent behavior. “We had been afraid of him for some time. Coexistence was very bad, complicated. Only no one imagined that he was capable of trying to kill me there,” he said.
