Gordon Cormier leading actor of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” revealed that after being cast in the role of Aang, he watched the original animation a total of 26 times . Furthermore, he said that, initially, he refused to audition for the character.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” follows the beloved story of Aang, an Avatar who is master of all four elements – water, earth, fire and air – and responsible for maintaining harmony between them. The production premiered on Netflix on February 22 and in its debut week alone, it topped the ranking of the platform's most watched series in at least 92 countries.
The production is an adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, released in 2005 by Nickelodeon, and one of the most loved animations in the world, with a fan base that has persisted over the years.
In an interview with the portal The Hollywood ReporterGordon Cormier revealed that he became a big fan of the production's universe as soon as he was cast, watching its original version a total of 26 times.
“After I got the role, I looked for the animated series. I watched it 26 times, because I became a huge fan. I didn't even watch it to study my character – the first time was for that. So I watched it again for fun, and again, and again, and again, and again. I feel like I really got to know Aang, to see what he's going through and hopefully bring that to live action, with a little deeper, darker tones.”
Gordon also reportedly refused to audition for Aang initially.
“I actually turned down the audition because I had no idea what it was. I got the audition and it was for a 12 year old boy. I was a little 11 year old at that time. I told my agent, 'I don't want any more auditions like this because I'm too small to play 12.' So I refused. And then they sent it back and said, 'No, we really want to see this,'” he revealed to the outlet.
One of the interesting things about preparing for the series is that before filming began, the actors participated in intensive bending training that lasted six weeks. There, they learned the history of each discipline, practiced physical conditioning and, in just two weeks, they were ready to show off their new skills in a live performance.
