A 200 meter protective barrier will be built to contain the advance of the sea in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), in Barra do Una, district of São Sebastião, in the south coast of São Paulo. The works will be done by the State Government.
The first step will be the construction of a rock barrier, which consists of a structure with stones, sand and cement to control the flow of water.
The rock will be along the road and can be up to three meters high. This initial stage will be conducted Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo (semil), through SP Águas.
The Forest Foundation, the Civil Defense and the Peruíbe City Hall will also follow the construction work of the protective barrier.
“We are acting with agility and responsibility, protecting both the environment and the way of life of families living here,” said Natália Resende, state secretary of the environment, infrastructure and logistics.
The Forest Foundation has said it will offer all the support to the traditional community and, after the interventions, will promote restoration of Restinga.
The work is part of the semil’s climate adaptation and resilience plan, which provides for actions aimed at protecting coastal zones.
Coastal erosion and climate change
According to research, coastal erosion is a natural phenomenon. In the case of Barra do UNA, the main factor is the migration of the unit of the Una from prelate to the north.
In addition, the occurrence of extreme climate events in recent years has intensified the erosive process in a stretch of the beach.
The sea has advanced, causing the loss of beach areas, which impacts the restinga vegetation and threatens nearby houses and buildings.
