Protesters demonstrate in France after far-right victory in first round of elections

Dozens of protesters gathered in the French capital on Sunday night (30), after the initial results of the first round of a parliamentary election that showed the National Rally (RN), Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, as the winner.

Protesters fired rockets into Paris as they marched through the city’s streets, past smoking tear gas canisters and burning trash cans.

The RN was seen winning around 34% of the vote, exit polls by Ipsos, Ifop, OpinionWay and Elabe showed, in a huge setback for President Emmanuel Macron, who called the snap election after his ticket was defeated by the RN in European Parliament elections earlier this month.

The RN’s chances of winning power next week will depend on the political deals its rivals make in the coming days. In the past, center-right and center-left parties have joined forces to keep the RN out of power, but this dynamic, known as the “republican front,” is less certain than ever.
