Protesters in Haiti burn a plane belonging to a US mission team

Protesters from Haiti protesting against crime in the city of Les Cayes on Tuesday set fire to a plane belonging to the US mission Agape Flights, according to local media and an Agape spokesman.

The protesters entered the local airport in Les Cayes, although the police launched a tear gas against the group, according to a video of the incident filmed by the Cayes Infos Online Media Complex.

The video shows dozens of people approaching the plane and pushing it on the asphalt. The plane was later seen on a road, apparently near the airport, where it caught fire.

“Our ground team is safe, we are preparing to take them back safely,” said Agape Flights, a spokeswoman for the Florida-based mission team that flies mail and humanitarian supplies to Caribbean countries.

The organization is still collecting information about the incident, the spokeswoman added.

It was not immediately clear why the protesters had targeted the plane.

The incident followed peaceful demonstrations in other parts of the country, in which activists called on the government to do more to address gang violence, including ongoing kidnappings.

“There was no violence along the way,” said Jean-Robert Argad, a member of a human rights group called the December 4th Collective, at a rally in Port-au-Prince to mark the 35th anniversary of the signing of the country’s constitution. .

“(Haiti) is suffering from kidnappings and insecurity.”
