Protesters protest in favor of Palestine on Avenida Paulista, in SP

A protest organized by protesters who support the Palestinian cause took over Avenida Paulista, near Praça Oswaldo Cruz, in São Paulo, this Sunday (22).

The place, which is a traditional meeting point for demonstrations, was taken over by pro-Palestinian militants, who held the country’s flags and, among other things, called for the formation of a Palestinian state in the Middle East and an end to Israeli attacks on the Strip. of Gaza.

Israel’s offensive began on October 7, in response to terrorist acts by the radical Islamic group Hamas that surprised the country.

Avenida Paulista, which is traditionally closed to car traffic on Sundays due to the São Paulo City Council’s Open Streets program, had a regular flow of vehicles. The Military Police deployed personnel to monitor the protest and ensure the safety of the protesters.

According to the Arab-Palestinian Federation of Brazil, around 60 thousand Palestinian immigrants and refugees currently live in Brazil — and most of them live in the capital of São Paulo.

Two-State Solution

The idea of a Two-State solution seems simple enough — an Israeli state and a Palestinian state, existing side by side in peace.

This has been the goal of the international community for decades, since the 1947 UN Partition Plan, and many nations say it is the only way out of the conflict. But progress towards achieving the goal has not been easy and has stagnated in recent years.

The two sides were unable to reach agreement on several issues fundamental to the solution. Both claim parts, if not all, of the holy city of Jerusalem as their capital.

They argue about where to draw borders and continue to clash over Israeli settlements in occupied territory. Furthermore, what happens to Palestinian refugees who fled what is now Israel after the 1948 war is a point of contention.
