Turkish authorities detained 89 people across the country for taking part in unauthorized protests, Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya wrote on social media X today. The protests in southeastern Turkey and the province of Izmir followed the election authority's decision to prevent the newly elected mayor of the pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) from taking office in the southeastern city of Van. The DEM party announced that its mayoral candidate Abdullah Zeidan, who was elected mayor in Sunday's municipal elections with about 55% of the vote, was disqualified from the mayoralty. The party has appealed against the relevant decision of the Turkish authorities.
