Protests continue to pressure Netanyahu after court turmoil

Thousands of flag-waving Israelis renewed their nationwide protests after sunset on Saturday, ending a week of turmoil in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed forward a hotly contested law limiting some of the Supreme Court’s power.

From a remote intersection between the lush columns of northern Galilee to the boulevards of Tel Aviv’s financial center, demonstrators beating drums and blowing bugles took to the streets on a warm Sabbath night.

The judicial overhaul pursued by Netanyahu and his right-wing government, the first part of which was approved on Monday, has generated an unprecedented crisis and opened up a deep social divide. The protests are in their 30th week.

The government’s plan undermined a commitment to call up some army reservists and drew stern warnings of economic fallout from ratings agencies.

Political watchdog groups have appealed to the Supreme Court to reject the new law, which removes the court’s authority to overrule what it considers “unreasonable” decisions by the government and ministers. The court said it would hear arguments in September, setting the stage for a constitutional conflict.
