Protests in Warsaw with a message against Lukashenko: A North Korea in the heart of Europe

Hundreds of people rallied in Warsaw on Saturday to express support for the Belarusian opposition, including the parents of a young Belarusian opposition journalist. Roman Protasevic, who was arrested in Minsk after being diverted and forced to land his RyanAir aircraft.

During the rally, journalist Natalia Protasevic’s mother called on “all European Union countries and the United States” to help “release Roman and his girlfriend Sofia, as well as every prisoner.”

“We want to live in a free country, in a country where everyone has the right to express their beliefs,” said Dmitri’s father.

Protesters chanted “Long live Belarus” and held placards reading “Freedom in Belarus”, “North Korea in the heart of Europe”.

“We really hope that Europe will help us, because it is difficult to fight a regime that has it all, that has power, while we have no weapons but flags,” said a Belarusian woman living in Warsaw.

“As Belarusians, we see a lot of atrocities and atrocities. “You know, this week a man was killed in prison,” said another protester.

For her part, Svetlana Tichanovskaya, a member of the Belarusian opposition living in self-imposed exile in Lithuania, tweeted today that her husband “has been imprisoned by the regime for a year.”

She ran for president in her husband’s place and, according to the Belarusian opposition, was the real winner of the election, which was marred by widespread fraud.
