Protests, violence stoke tensions in Iran, spark international backlash

More than 300 people, including 50 children, have been killed in Iran in the last two months, after the beginning of a wave of protests and the repression of the Iranian security forces against demonstrators, who call for more freedom and changes in the regime that governs the country. . The figures are an estimate by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who described the situation in Iran as “critical”.

The mobilizations began after the death of the 22-year-old Kurd Mahsa Amini, who was in police custody after being arrested for disrespecting the norms of wearing the Islamic headscarf, mandatory for women in Iran. In the face of reports of violence in the response of the Iranian authorities to the protests, the country became the target of new international sanctions.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an overview of the reactions and doubts about the wave of protests that took the streets of Iran. To describe the reasons that contribute to the heightening of tension in the country, participating in this episode are international relations professor Leonardo Trevisan, from ESPM, and international policy analyst from CNN Lourival Sant’Anna.
