What is asexuality? Asexuality is a sexual orientation that involves sexual attraction towards any gender.
So asexual people can’t have sex or masturbate? Wrong. Sexual attraction and libido, unlike what we may think, are different: libido is a generic desire, in which nervous, hormonal, and psychic factors affect, but it is not necessarily related to a specific person or requires someone else to be satisfied. Asexual people can therefore satisfy their libido in multiple ways, be it by watching porn or masturbating, but still not experiencing sexual attraction to anyone *.
Asexuality, like any sexual orientation, is made up of nuances and there is no single way to experience it: it manifests itself in different forms that belong and vary according to the intimate and individual sphere of the person. Asexuality is often combined with aromatics, which is the total or partial absence of romantic attraction towards other people.
To better understand these small but fundamental differences, there is the SAM (Split Attraction Model), or a “model of subdivision of attractions”, which separates sexual attraction from romantic and in turn includes a whole series of intermediate nuances: among these nuances there may be people who develop sexual attraction only after developing a deep emotional bond with the other person (demisexuals) or people who experience sexual attraction sporadically or in very particular conditions and may not place themselves in either extreme – neither asexual nor aromantic – and they go under the umbrella term asexual gray aromantic gray.
There is no right way to be asexual and in a society that puts sex at the center of our everyday life (and often only in a specific way or under certain conditions that are the same for all *) there is often a tendency to invalidate the asexual experience, infantilizing or ridiculing those who are part of it.
