A provisional measure published this Monday (21) in the Official Gazette waives the need for a selection process to fill vacancies for census takers for the 2022 Census. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), training will normally be offered to the new hires.
Currently, Brazil has around 96,000 professionals working. The amount corresponds to just over half of what is stipulated as necessary by the IBGE, which indicates that there are still approximately 90,000 open positions.
The provisional measure also defined that retired servants of the Union, States, Federal District or Municipalities can be hired.
Approximately 73% of the Brazilian population has been registered so far. In the last assessment carried out by the IBGE, in early November, the agency disclosed that the collection of information on households should have already been completed, but had to be extended until mid-December due to the lack of teams.
The Census was scheduled for 2020, ten years after the last edition, but it was postponed to 2022, initially, due to the pandemic and later due to budget problems.
