Provocative Spectator article: Greece will never return Parthenon Sculptures if it gets them back

The Spectator magazine published an article by the British historian of Indian origin, Zareer Masani, who argues that the Parthenon sculptures they are “British cultural heritage” and should not be given back to Greece.

As stated in spectator.co.ukconsiders that for three reasons Greece should not take back its ancients. Firstly it’s mentioned that there is no direct descent of today’s Greeks from the ancient Greeks and Secondly how no claim was made when the Greek state was established, which was initially controlled from the Great Powers and especially the British Empire.

THE third reason however, which is particularly important based on him, is how the antiquities were legally purchased by Elgin based on what was valid only in his timewhile if the theft had not taken place, he believes that they would have been destroyed at the hands of the Greeks.

We all know what happens in these cases“, he says, adding that if Greece takes them, it will never give them back.

The historian who has championed the legacy of the British Empire in the past makes special reference to “decolonization”, meaning the tendency of once-colonial countries to return antiquities they had stolen from their colonies or other countries.

According to him, the stolen antiquities are considered British heritage and continuity of British history and not of the countries in which they were createdso they should not be returned, so he uses as an example – as he mentions – the issue of the Parthenon Sculptures.
