Public school student in Piauí gets a full scholarship at the University of NY

rnoThe 19-year-old student Haziel de Oliveira Soares, who attended high school at the João Henrique de Almeida State Center for Integral Time (CETI) in Teresina (PI), won a full scholarship to study Physics at the University of New York, in Abu Dhabi Campus, United Arab Emirates.

The student represented the state of Piauí in events such as “Jovem Senador” and “Parlamento Jovem”, aimed at high school students from public schools, and which teach about the Brazilian Legislative Power.

This spurred Soares to get the spot, as institutions in the United States value extracurricular activities in the curriculum.

In an interview with the government of Piauí, the director of the school informed that the student was selected in February this year.

Due to the pandemic, the piauiense will only be able to start studies from September, when the American school year begins.

“Haziel studied all of high school here at the school and was being accompanied by us. His achievement took place through tests and according to his resume. Today, he is on the issue of sending documents. We are all very happy with this great victory, which is another step towards an exemplary life as a student”, added the director.

Soares was born in Barras, a town 120 kilometers away from Teresina. To find better study conditions, he moved to the capital and from childhood he liked to attend school.

The student says that already in elementary school he was concerned with performing extracurricular tasks. In his first year of high school, he participated in a preparatory course for the scientific Olympics, the so-called “Educational Olympic City”.

The goal was always to study Physics, the question was just to know where I would go to fulfill that dream. After applying to 20 US universities, Haziel passed New York University.

To the government of Piauí, he detailed the feat. “It was what I really wanted to study. I received a full scholarship that pays all my costs, from university tuition to materials, housing, food and personal expenses like the airline tickets themselves,” he said.

Now, Haziel prepares for what will live there. “I hope to have contact with people from all over the world, learn about different cultures and study different areas as a second course that would be Political Science. This academic flexibility is something that interests me a lot, I’m really looking forward to living there”.
