Public transport must be the new inflation villain in 2022

Public transport is gaining speed to become the new inflation villain in 2022. The sector plans to increase the price of tickets to cover the gap left by low passenger demand during the pandemic.

According to the economist at FGV (Getulio Vargas Foundation) André Braz, in addition to covering the costs of the pandemic, the readjustment should also serve to cover the increase in fuel prices.

“There is a chance that, in 2022, there will be an important readjustment in bus fares, precisely because fuel labor has a large share in the cost structure of companies,” stated Braz.

Diesel oil accumulates an increase of more than 65% in one year. Added to this, there is the possible salary readjustment of the category and the low demand of passengers which, according to the sector, generated a loss of more than R$21 billion in 20 months.

Inflation in transport generates chain effects and is already identified by specialists as the great villain of the economy in 2022.

Municipal managers have advocated medium- and long-term changes in concessions and in the mathematics of tariff composition. In the short term, the national front of mayors made a proposal to the federal government to subsidize free tickets.

The Ministry of Regional Development said in a note that, in the last two years, it has taken measures to help governments and companies in the sector to overcome the impacts of the pandemic, from the suspension of repayment terms for financing to the direct transfer of funds for emergency actions. The folder stated that it is studying new financing possibilities.
