Public ward beds for Covid-19 are running out in Belo Horizonte

According to a bulletin released by the Municipal Health Department of Belo Horizonte this Tuesday (4), the infirmary beds for Covid-19 in the Unified Health System (SUS) in the capital of Minas Gerais are exhausted. The occupancy rate of nursing units for patients with coronavirus reaches 105%.

However, the Municipality of Belo Horizonte informs that the occupation above the 100% rate does not mean that there is a queue for care, and that all patients are being treated in hospitals with all the necessary supplies and equipment.

Given the large number of cases of influenza in Brazil, the city of Belo Horizonte clarifies in a note that patients with flu-like symptoms, but who have not yet tested positive for Covid-19, may also be hospitalized in the infirmary beds, since “the symptoms are very similar”.

The last time the occupancy rate of infirmary beds for Covid-19 was above 75.1% in Belo Horizonte was in April of last year, when the index reached 75.3%. According to the Municipal Health Department, the number of beds dedicated to the care of patients with coronaviruses was “much higher at that time”.

The city also registers high in the number of admissions in Intensive Care Units (ICU) for Covid-19. According to the latest epidemiological bulletin, the occupancy rate in ICU beds is currently 78.8%.

The municipal health department of the capital of Minas Gerais informs that it monitors the epidemiological numbers of the city on a daily basis and that, if necessary, “the beds can be converted to Covid care or new beds can be opened”.
