American film producer and film studio Miramax – responsible for the acclaimed film “Pulp Fiction” – is suing Quentin Tarantino, the feature’s director, for planning the sale of NFTs related to the 1994 work.
The two-time Academy Award-winning director and screenwriter announced Nov. 2 that he will sell NFTs — the “non-fungible tokens” — for seven previously unreleased scenes from the film starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson as two professional hit men working on collections at Los Angeles criminal underworld.
The NFTs also include excerpts from the original handwritten script for the film, as well as exclusive commentary from the screenwriter and director.
Miramax filed a complaint in Los Angeles court last Tuesday, alleging that the director infringed “intellectual property rights relating to one of Miramax’s most iconic and valuable film properties” by offering to sell the NFTs .
Tarantino’s representatives did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.
“On learning of Tarantino’s plan, Miramax submitted a ‘cease and desist’ request exposing, in detail, Tarantino’s disregard for Miramax’s broad rights to ‘Pulp Fiction,’” the lawsuit states. Reserved rights are sufficient, Tarantino was not intimidated and refused to comply with Miramax’s demands to cancel the sale of Pulp Fiction NFTs.”
The lawsuit said Tarantino kept Miramax in the dark regarding the sale and that is “particularly problematic” as the director “granted and ceded almost all of its ‘Pulp Fiction’ rights to Miramax in 1993.”
“Tarantino’s conduct forced Miramax to file this lawsuit against a valued collaborator,” the lawsuit said. “If left unchecked, Tarantino’s conduct may induce others to believe that Miramax is involved in his venture.”
The lawsuit alleges that Tarantino’s conduct in relation to the sale may also “induce others to believe they have a right to pursue similar deals or offerings, when in fact Miramax holds the necessary rights to develop, market and sell NFTs related to its library. of movies.”
“This group has chosen to recklessly, greedily and willfully neglect the agreement Quentin signed rather than follow the clear legal and ethical approach of simply communicating with Miramax about its proposed ideas,” said Bart Williams, attorney representing Miramax, on CNN.
“This unique effort devalues the rights of Pulp Fiction NFTs, which Miramax intends to maximize through a strategic and comprehensive approach.”
Each NFT is “coined” into a blockchain to give it a verified identity. This makes them collectible items that can become quite valuable.
“Pulp Fiction” is one of the most influential films of the last 30 years and has a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is arguably Tarantino’s most famous film and helped launch his iconic Hollywood career.
The director has directed several award-winning films, including “Free Django”, “Once upon a time in…Hollywood” and “Inglourious bastards”.
