Purgatório Bar and Restaurant brings Iberian flavors to São Paulo

A mix of a Spanish tapas bar with a Portuguese tavern, the new Purgatory, in São Paulo, opens its doors with a proposal that promises to take visitors to a place between heaven and earth, with some of the best pleasures in life: excellent wines, great food and good music.

The menu is lean and revolving, ensuring fresh ingredients every day. Presented to customers on a small blackboard by the waiter, the menu focuses on the cuisine of the south of the Iberian Peninsula, more specifically on the Andalusia (Spain) and Alentejo (Portugal) regions. In other words, expect lots of fish and seafood, jamón and croquetas.

The recipes are led by the Italian-Venezuelan chef Sabrina Cadet, who has passages through kitchens in Spain, Mexico and Italy. For the new house, she brings among the fixed items on the menu a Basket of Breads of chorizo, olive oil and olives, specially developed by the Fabrique bakery (R$ 16.90), as well as a portion of mixed croquettes: stuffed Spanish croquetas with béchamel cream, ham and alioli; or Portuguese meat croquettes and cod fritters (both R$38).

Other options that usually appear on the menu are Polvo à Galega (octopus in olive oil with sweet and spicy paprika – R$72); Woodpecker (filet mignon with olive oil, white wine, garlic and bay leaf – R$ 44.60); Potato, egg and onion tortilla (R$36); Possums à pil pil (shrimps with roasted pepper and chilli sauce R$ 42.90) and Almejas (vongole in green parsley – R$ 30).

For the main ones, the house specialty is Porco Preto, a pork delicacy accompanied by fried potatoes and peppers (R$86). There’s also the Bitoque: filet mignon covered with a fried egg and fries (R$ 61.90); Açorda de Marisco (R$130) and Arroz de Cherne, a soupy rice with tomato, grouper and shrimp (R$159) to share.

The house has a comfortable veranda, an invitation to enjoy a good time with friends or a date. To accompany, in addition to drinks, the wine list features old-world labels with options by the glass (from R$36) and bottles (from R$157), such as the Flor de Crasto house wine, white or red .

On the second floor, an intimate lounge for up to 25 people, inspired by European cabarets. The music program is announced on social networks and takes place from Thursday to Saturday.
