Pussy Riot’s Aliochina escaped from Russia dressed as … a food distributor

A member of the Russian band Pussy Riot, Maria Aliochina, confirmed today that she managed to leave Russia after she tricked the police by disguising herself as a ready-to-eat food distributor.

In an interview with the New York Times, the 33-year-old political activist recounts that she managed to leave Moscow in this way, leaving behind her mobile phone to prevent the police from locating her.

She then crossed the border into neighboring Belarus and a week later – with the help of an Icelandic artist who provided her with travel documents – was able to cross into Lithuania, after much effort, according to the interview.

“I was glad to be there, because it is a big and unpredictable + farewell kiss + for the Russian authorities”, he commented ironically in the newspaper.

Lucia Stein, also a member of Pussy Riot, posted on Twitter a photo of Maria Aliochina in the green uniform of the Delivery Club distributors and a bag for delivering meals on her back.

Aliokhina “did not leave Russia, she went on tour”, which will start with a concert on May 12 in Berlin, to raise money for Ukraine, Stein said on Twitter.

Aliokhina and the other members of the group first aroused the interest of the Russian authorities when they organized a protest against the Russian president inside the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow in 2012.

Despite being sentenced to two years in prison for their activism, members of the group continued to crack down on the Kremlin leader, with Aliokhina saying she was determined to fight Putin’s regime.

After her release from prison, she continued her activism and together with another member of the band founded the information network MediaZona.

In April, Russian authorities placed her under house arrest as part of a crackdown on dissent in Ukraine.

He was then forced to spend 21 days in a penitentiary.
