Russia and the United States are working to hold a video conference between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden amid escalating tensions between the two countries over Ukraine, the Kremlin announced today.
“Work is underway. This is a video conference,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said when asked about the format of the long-awaited meeting.
“The exact date has not yet been decided,” Peshkov said, adding that “the two sides have made proposals on the dates, but they have not yet been synchronized.”
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday that a “contact” between the presidents of Russia and the United States could take place “in the coming days”, without elaborating.
The announcement came yesterday, the day Russian and US diplomats Sergei Lavrov and Anthony Blinken met amid tensions over Ukraine, with Washington accusing Moscow of plotting to invade the country.
“This meeting was a good opportunity for the two sides to explain their position to each other clearly and understandably,” Peshkov said today, stressing, however, that “on several issues, the positions differ.”
Tensions between Washington and Moscow have risen sharply in recent months, despite Putin and Biden wanting to ease tensions at their first summit in Geneva in June.
One of the main issues of contention concerns the movements of Russian troops around Ukraine, in the eastern part of which a conflict has been raging since 2014 between Kiev and pro-Russian separatist guerrillas. In recent days, the US, NATO and the EU have not stopped expressing their concerns on this issue.
