Russian President Vladimir Putin has discussed the situation in Kazakhstan with his Kazakh counterpart Kasim-Jomart Tokayev in a series of telephone conversations, according to Kremlin sources in Russian news agencies.
The Russian head of state also spoke with leaders of other countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) military alliance, both on Thursday and Friday, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peshkov was quoted as saying.
Kazakh security forces reportedly regained control of Kazakhstan’s largest city, Alma Ata, on Friday after days of violence, with the Russian-backed president now ordering uniformed gunmen to shoot without warning to quell the nationwide uprising that has erupted in the country, on the occasion of the spike in fuel prices.
