Putin apologizes to Aliyev for shooting down Azerbaijan Airlines plane – ‘We were intercepting Ukrainian drones’

According to Russian state media, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, had a telephone conversation with the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The Russian head of state described the crash as a “tragic incident” and admitted that Russian air defenses were on at the time of the plane’s approach. Putin insisted that Russian troops were intercepting Ukrainian drones attacking the Russian region of Chechnya. At the same time, the Kremlin confirmed that a criminal investigation has been launched into the crash. Russian forces have also been accused of tampering with the plane’s systems and refusing to give permission for it to make an emergency landing in Russia. The pilots tried to rescue the stricken plane by making it across the Caspian Sea before it crashed into the ground near Aktau International Airport in Kazakhstan.
