Putin appeals to Russian patriotism during national day

President Vladimir Putin marked Russia Day on Monday with an appeal to the patriotic pride of Russians in what he said was a “difficult time” for the country.

However, speaking at a lavish award-giving ceremony in the Kremlin, Putin made no direct comment on the latest developments in Ukraine, where Kiev forces have launched a long-awaited counter-offensive and retaken villages in the eastern Donetsk region. in the last days.

“This holiday marks the inseparability of our centuries-old history, the greatness and glory of the Motherland,” Putin told the assembled dignitaries.

“Today, in a difficult moment for Russia, (feelings of patriotism and pride) unite our society even more strongly… (and) serve as a reliable support for our heroes participating in the special military operation (in Ukraine),” Putin said. .

Russia’s Ministry of Defense released a video for the national day featuring scenes of lakes, forests, churches and Russian Orthodox icons, along with clips of soldiers expressing love for their country.

“I am Russian, thank God, I am Russian, I am very lucky,” says one of them.

“Russia is like a fortress above the abyss, it has resisted and will resist,” says another.

On this day in 1991, the Russian parliament formally declared Russia’s sovereignty over the Soviet Union. The union of socialist republics was officially dissolved in December of that year and the June 12 holiday was established in 1992.
