Putin, ceasefire for Orthodox Christmas. Kiev: “Hypocrisy”

The Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered a ceasefire ahead of Orthodox Christmas, which is celebrated on January 7. The announcement published on the Kremlin website establishes a truce for all soldiers from 12 noon on 6 January to 12 midnight on 7 January. “In consideration of the fact that a large number of citizens of the Orthodox faith live in the combat zones” reads the note released by the press service of the Russian presidency taken up by the RIA Novosti agency. “We appeal to the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire, to give them the opportunity to attend the ceremonies on the eve as well as on the day of the Nativity of Christ.”

The announcement came a few hours after the call for a truce by the Orthodox patriarch of Moscow Kirillnon, joined by that of the Turkish president Erdogan for a unilateral truce in Ukraine. From Kiev the dry answer. «Russia must withdraw from the occupied territories, only then will it have a temporary respite. Keep your hypocrisy”, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter. «Ukraine does not attack foreign territories and does not kill civilians. As does the Russian Federation. Ukraine destroys only those belonging to the occupying forces on its territory”.

It is not the first time that Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a ceasefire. It had already happened in the first months of the war with the intention of allowing civilians to leave the affected areas but this was often not respected. Furthermore, the timing of the announcement of the truce makes us suspicious: in fact, the ceasefire arrives after the heavy one bombing that on New Year’s Eve killed 89 Russian soldiers in Makiivka near the city of Donetsk.

Meanwhile, as the conflict approaches the sad milestone of a year, on February 24th, talk continues of peace attempts, from plan in 10 points of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, to the opening to a “serious dialogue” by Russia, “on condition that the Kiev authorities respect the Russian requirements and take into account the new territorial realities”.
