Putin ‘convinced’ that an ‘effective’ Russia-US dialogue is possible

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that he was “convinced” that an “effective” dialogue with the United States was possible, in his wishes for the end of the year to his counterpart Joe Biden, a few hours before their telephone conversation.

“I am convinced (…) that we can move forward and forge an effective Russian-American dialogue on the basis of mutual respect and taking into account the national interests of each country,” he wrote in a telegram, according to the Kremlin, amid a crisis between in Russia and the West for Ukraine.

Messrs. Biden and Putin are expected to have a telephone conversation today at around 22:30 Greek time – this will be the second time such talks have taken place in less than a month.

The US president is considering proposing, according to the White House, a “diplomatic route” to exit the crisis between Russia and the West over Ukraine.

Moscow, for its part, has made its demands known, in particular a treaty that would rule out any future NATO enlargement, especially to its neighbor Ukraine.

The first talks between the two countries are scheduled for January 10 in Geneva.

Westerners accuse Moscow of plotting to invade Ukraine, as tens of thousands of men and large quantities of material and equipment have been deployed along the border.
