Putin criticizes the West and declares the end of the “era of the unipolar world”

the russian president Vladimir Putin declared the end of the “era of the unipolar world” in a combative speech in which he criticized the western countries at the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg this Friday (17).

“When they won the Cold War, the United States declared itself representatives of God himself on earth, people who have no responsibilities – only interests. They declared these sacred interests. Now it’s one-way traffic, which makes the world unstable,” Putin told the audience.

The long-awaited speech was delayed by more than 90 minutes because of a “massive” cyber attack.

the spokesperson of Kremlin Dmitry Peskov, told reporters on an impromptu conference call that the speech was delayed due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on conference systems.

“Unfortunately, today, due to massive DDoS attacks on the forum system, the accreditation and admission base has been disabled,” said Peskov.

Peskov told CNN in a text message that technical experts working to fix the systems “would need 30 to 40 minutes” to restore the database.

Putin’s speech at the annual conference in the Russian city was seen as an opportunity for the world to gain insight into the leader’s thinking four months after his war against Ukraine .

The Russian president has long framed his decision to launch an invasion of Ukraine as a response to growing diplomatic and security ties between Kiev with the West. Last week, he hinted that his goal in Ukraine is the restoration of Russia as an imperial power.

Just before Putin’s speech on Friday, Russian Senator Konstantin Kosachev told CNN who believed that Russia’s actions in Ukraine “prevented a major war, probably a third world war”.

“If you keep in mind the prospect that it could have become a reality, Ukraine becoming part of NATO,” said Kosachev, who is the deputy chairman of the Federation Council of Russia .

“Member states having their opinion on Crimea, having their opinion on non-NATO matters, the United States would be included in the military conflict with Russia. And now, that military conflict is stopped and that’s the end of the story. This is the only good news.”

The European Commission announced on Friday that it was recommending Ukraine and neighboring Moldova as candidate countries to the European Union, with the head of the committee, Ursula von der Leyen , saying that Ukrainians are “ready to die” from the European perspective. Peskov said the announcement demanded “greater attention” from Moscow.

“We all know about the intensification in Europe and the discussions about strengthening the defense component of the European Union. So there are different transformations that we see,” he said Friday during a routine daily call with reporters.
