Russian President Vladimir Putin fired four deputy defense ministers on Monday (17) and appointed a relative, Anna Tsivileva, to fill one of the vacancies.
Putin fired deputy defense ministers Nikolai Pankov, Ruslan Tsalikov, Tatiana Shevtsova and Pavel Popov in accordance with Kremlin decrees. He appointed Tsivileva, who Russian media said was the daughter of Putin’s cousin, as deputy defense minister.
Leonid Gornin, Deputy Minister of Finance, will be the first Deputy Minister of Defense under Defense Minister Andrei Belousov.
Pavel Fradkov, son of former Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense. Oleg Savelyev was also appointed Deputy Minister of Defense.
After Putin last month appointed Belousov as defense minister and transferred Sergei Shoigu to Russia’s Security Council, the move appears to be an attempt to install loyalists in the Defense Ministry.
