Putin, Erdogan announce construction of third reactor at Akuyu nuclear power plant

The Russian president Vladimir Putin and the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan via a video conference connection announced today the start of construction work on the third party building reactor of the nuclear power plant under construction “Akuyu” in Turkey, the operation of which is scheduled for 2023.

The Russian president, who was present at the teleconference, said that Rosatom uses the most advanced technologies in the construction of the nuclear power plant, while meeting the highest standards in terms of safety and environmental protection. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the successful implementation of this project will allow the upgrading of bilateral energy cooperation, and will give a strong impetus to Turkey’s development in the field of nuclear energy.

The Russian president said that at present most of the more than 8,000 workers at the plant under construction are Turks, and said that more than 100 Turkish students are currently studying in Russia, who will then be employed at the Akuyu nuclear power plant. In total this year, the Russian president said, more than 200 Turks will graduate and once the plant is operational, there will be a sufficient number of specialists working in the field of nuclear energy in Turkey.

The construction of the Akuyu nuclear power plant in the province of Mersin has been undertaken by the Russian state-owned company Rosatom, while the decision to build it was taken after the agreement signed by Russia and Turkey in 2010. The managing company is Akkuyu Nukleer JSC and 99% and now the share capital belongs to the Russian Rosatom. The plant will have 4 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 4,800 Megawatts, which will be able to produce about 35 billion kilowatts / hour per year.

Construction of the first reactor began in April 2018 and the second in June 2020. Permission to build the fourth reactor is expected in the fall of 2021. The first reactor is scheduled to be operational in 2023, when celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.
