At Russia a law signed by Putin was passed and now all officials are prohibited from using foreign languages wordswhile otherwise there will be relevant sanctions.
After invading Ukraine a year ago, Putin says he wants to protect Russia from what he calls the degenerate West, which he claims is trying to destroy his country, Reuters reported.
The amendments to a 2005 law aim to protect and support the status of the Russian language, according to the text posted on the government’s website.
“When using Russian, as the official language of the Russian Federation, it is not allowed to use words and expressions that do not correspond to the rules of the modern Russian language (…) with the exception of foreign words for which there is no widely used equivalent in Russian” mentions this text.
The list of foreign words that can still be used will be published separately. The amendments do not state what penalties anyone who fails to comply with the updated law will face.
