Putin guarantees Bolsonaro fertilizers for Brazilian agriculture

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday assured his Brazilian counterpart Zaich Bolsonaro by telephone on Monday that Moscow was “committed” to guaranteeing Brazil an “uninterrupted supply” of fertilizers, essential for its strong agricultural sector.

During a public rally in Brasilia on Monday, Bolsonaro said he had discussed “food security” and “energy insecurity” with his counterpart, without elaborating.

The Kremlin, for its part, said in a press release that during the meeting, Putin “stressed that Russia is committed to fulfilling its obligations and guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of Russian farmers with Russian fertilizers.”

He also called for “the restoration of the architecture of the free trade of food and fertilizers, which has collapsed due to Western sanctions” imposed on Russia over its military invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Although a global agri-food power, Brazil imports more than 80% of its fertilizers, up from 96% in terms of potassium, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture.

More than 20% of fertilizers imported into Brazil come from Russia, its main supplier.

Latin America’s largest economy is seeking to strengthen its supply chains, focusing mainly on Canada, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco. It is also trying to revitalize domestic fertilizer production.

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of Brazil’s far-right president, recalled via Twitter on Monday that his father had met with Vladimir Putin in February, just 24 hours before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, to discuss fertilizers, which are fundamental to our agri-food security “.
