Putin – Lukashenko say sanctions have boosted their economies ‘self-development’

Russian President Vladimir Putin “joked” today that he should speak seriously to Western leaders over their claims that he was responsible for the economic chaos caused by the conflict in Ukraine and the West’s deadly sanctions.

Thousands have been killed and 14 million displaced since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Western efforts to isolate Russia and blockade Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea have led to a drop in oil prices. , natural gas, cereals, cooking oils and fertilizers.

In a televised meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Sochi today, Putin said the Russian economy was doing well despite Western sanctions.

Mr Lukashenko said the sanctions had prompted both countries to focus on their development and that Western elites were deluding themselves into the causes of their economic woes. “For the economy, we owe them (in the West) because they gave us such a boost to our growth,” Lukashenko told Putin, who smiled and nodded. “What is happening there is that they really underestimated it, reading their own media. They are inflationary, but their truth is that ‘Putin is responsible,’ ‘Putin is to blame for everything,'” Lukashenko continued.

Putin pursed his lips and nodded.

“We will have a serious discussion with them,” he replied, with a hurried smile.

Lukashenko laughed and said “Yes”.
