Ukraine’s head of military intelligence says Russian President Vladimir Putin may be trying to split Ukraine in two – like North Korea and South Korea.
Brigadier General Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency, said Russia’s operations in Kiev have failed and it is now impossible for the Russian army to overthrow the Ukrainian government. Putin’s war is now focused on the south and east of the country, he said.
“There are reasons to believe he is considering a ‘Korean’ scenario for Ukraine. That is, [as forças russas] will try to impose a dividing line between the occupied and unoccupied regions of our country. In fact, it is an attempt to create North Korea and South Korea in Ukraine.”
Budanov said Russia remains intent on establishing a land corridor between the Russian border and Crimea, and said he expects to see an attempt to unite Russian-occupied territories into a single entity.
“We are already seeing attempts to create ‘parallel’ authorities in the occupied territories and force people to give up the currency. [ucraniana],” said Budanov, adding that he hopes the Ukrainians will resist Russia’s political efforts.
