Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting with members of his government this Thursday (10). The aim is to discuss measures to minimize the impact of sanctions on the Russian economy, the Kremlin said in a statement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the United States had declared “economic war” on Russia. He called the sanctions applied by the West a hostile act that shook global markets.
Russia’s economy is facing the most serious crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
This Tuesday (8), the United States announced that it will ban the import of oil, natural gas and coal from Russia.
“We see that the situation in energy markets is developing quite turbulently – and we don’t know how far this turmoil will go,” Peskov said.
He declined to describe the exact nature of Russia’s response.
The West’s attempt to cut off Russia – one of the world’s biggest exporters of oil, gas and metals – has hit commodity markets and raised the specter of spiraling inflation across the world.
The latest US sanction was announced by President Joe Biden in a speech at the White House. He said this was yet another attempt to impact the Russian economy due to the war in Ukraine.
“Today, I am announcing that the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia’s economy. We are banning all imports of Russian oil, gas and energy.”
“This means that Russian oil will no longer be acceptable in US ports and the American people will deliver another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine,” he added.
Biden stated that the decision was taken after consulting allies, such as European Union countries – which did not adhere to the ban -, and he understands that this move can increase the price of fuel in the world, including in the US.
“We understand that Putin’s war is causing damage and driving up prices, but that is no excuse for companies to exploit American consumers. This is not the time to make a profit on the situation”, he pointed out, adding that companies that “are leaving Russia are setting an example for others”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the “special military operation” was essential to ensure Russian security after the United States expanded NATO’s military alliance to Russia’s borders and supported pro-Western leaders in Kiev.
Ukraine says it is fighting for its existence and the United States and its European and Asian allies have condemned the Russian invasion.
