Putin plays with uncertainties in international politics, says political scientist

One of the main characters of the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin, may be taking advantage of an unstable political moment on the global stage, according to the evaluation of the master in Political Science Natali Hoff, in an interview with CNN.

“He [Putin] plays with this Russian energy and geopolitical importance and also with this instability in the leadership, this moment of uncertainty in international politics itself as a whole”, he said.

According to the expert, these uncertainties pervade the American context – which involves the recent exit from Afghanistan and a weakening caused by the mandate of former President Donald Trump – and the European context – with Brexit, the transition of government in Germany and the elections in France.

Given the circumstances, the political scientist believes that the sanctions established by the West may not be enough to prevent a Russian military onslaught in Ukraine.

“Right now, what Putin has is the construction of an economy that, due to the existence of previous sanctions, ends up being more resistant to sanctions”, he explained.

In addition to previous experiences, the expert argues that the application of sanctions in Russia is complex, due to the country’s energy capabilities and its influence on the pricing of various products.
