Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that while Russia sought to cooperate with all the independent nations that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union, the situation in Ukraine “is different” due to the intervention of foreign nations.
“After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia recognized all new geopolitical realities and, as you know, is actively working to strengthen our cooperation with all independent countries that emerged in the post-Soviet space,” Putin said.
“We intend to work in this way with all our neighbors, but with Ukraine, the situation is different,” he continued. “This is because, unfortunately, the territory of this country is being used by third countries to create threats against the Russian Federation itself. That’s the only reason.”
Addressing Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Moscow, Putin spoke of his decision to recognize the separatist-controlled Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic on Monday.
“I will say immediately that we anticipated speculation on this matter that ‘Russia is going to restore an empire within imperial borders’. This is absolutely not true,” Putin said, adding that he will discuss the situation in Ukraine in more detail during his meeting with Aliyev.
