Putin removes the deputy defense ministers and appoints a relative

Russian President Vladimir Putin has removed four deputy defense ministers and appointed a relative of his, Anna Tsivilieva, to the position of one of the deputy ministers. Putin removed deputy ministers Nikolai Pankov, Ruslan Chalikov, Tatiana Shevtsova and Pavel Popov, according to decrees published by the Kremlin. In the post of a deputy minister he appointed Tsivilyeva, who Russian media reports is the daughter of Putin’s cousin. Leonid Gornin, a deputy finance minister, will be the first-in-class deputy defense minister under Defense Minister Andrei Belousov. Pavel Fradkov, son of former Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, was appointed to the position of Deputy Minister of Defense. Oleg Saveliev was also appointed Deputy Minister of Defense. Following the appointment last month of Belausov as defense minister and the move of Sergei Shoigu to Russia’s Security Council, the new appointments by President Putin look like an attempt to install his own people in the defense ministry.
