Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview that aired this Thursday (8) that Russia has no interest in invading “Poland, Latvia or anywhere else” and said that saying Moscow could do that would be spreading threats.
Putin made the comments during a rare two-hour interview with US television host Tucker Carlson, recorded in Moscow on Tuesday (6).
Asked if he could imagine a scenario in which he would send Russian troops to Poland, a member of NATO. Putin replied:
“Only in one case: if Poland attacks Russia. Why? Because we have no interest in Poland, Latvia or anywhere else. Why would we do this? We simply have no interest.”
The interview was held in Moscow on Tuesday (6) and broadcast on tuckercarlson.com.
Putin spoke in Russian and his comments were dubbed into English. He began with long comments about Russia's relations with Ukraine, Poland and other countries.
According to the Kremlin, Putin agreed to Carlson's interview because the former Fox News host's approach is different from the “one-sided” reporting on the conflict in Ukraine by many Western media outlets.
Carlson is believed to have close links to former US President Donald Trump, who is expected to be the Republican Party candidate in November's US presidential election.
Trump has called for a de-escalation of the war in Ukraine, which the Biden administration has strongly supported under Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's government, but has complained about the hundreds of millions of dollars in aid sent so far.
In turn, Carlson said that much of Western media coverage of the war is biased in favor of Kiev.
