Putin: Russia is “not interested” in escalating conflict in the Middle East

Russia is “not interested” in escalating the conflict in the Middle East, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (24), when asked whether Moscow would provide support to Iran if Israel launched an attack.

“We are very concerned about what is happening in the region. Russia is not interested in escalating the conflict. We will gain nothing from this strategically, we will only see additional problems,” said Putin, speaking at a press conference at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

Moscow is in contact with Iran, but is focused on compromise and diplomacy, according to Putin, adding that “we see our role as creating conditions for resolving the situation by seeking mutual compromises.”

Putin positions Russia as a possible neutral mediator in the Middle East, capable of working with both Israel and regional neighbors. He noted that Israel “suffered a terrorist attack in October last year, so we have to calmly walk around it.”

“We have to analyze everything accurately, but we must not tolerate disproportionate responses to such terrorist attacks,” the Russian leader added.

How to CNN previously reported, observers say Putin is using the conflict in the Middle East – and anger across the Global South towards the US and its support for Israel as the death toll in Gaza rises – to press his case. in favor of a new world order, without the USA in charge.

The way out of the conflict, Putin said on Thursday, is to “remove the root causes of this situation, and the main cause is the absence of a full-fledged Palestinian state.”
