On Wednesday, September 1, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, as part of his trip to the Far East, held a meeting with schoolchildren in honor of the Day of Knowledge. During the meeting, he shared his views on genetic engineering.
According to Putin, it makes no sense to create artificial barriers to the development of genetic engineering. Russia will take a different path, and vice versa, will support research in this area, because with the help of these technologies it will be possible to set qualitative characteristics of future biological objects.
“With the help of genetic engineering, it is possible, in principle, to shape the quality of future biological objects. This is a very important thing. The consequences, if humanity follows this path, are difficult to predict, one must bear this in mind. There are scientific and moral considerations. This is a very important question. But the fact that development will go one way or another is quite obvious. And it makes no sense to create artificial barriers, ”the head of state emphasized.
He added that genetic engineering is perhaps the most interesting thing in the field of technology today. Therefore, Russia is undoubtedly ready to support these studies. The main thing, according to the president, is for the world community to develop general criteria for work in the field of genetic engineering and adhere to them.
It is interesting that in Russia the use of genetically modified objects in the food industry is practically prohibited. Nevertheless, the country is actively pursuing scientific research in this area.
