French President Emmanuel Macron had another telephone conversation today with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and then called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the French presidency announced.
The conversation with the Russian president lasted an hour and a half, according to the French presidency and is the third between the two men since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
“A sincere exchange of views on the situation around Ukraine has continued,” the Kremlin said in a statement on the Putin-Macron meeting.
According to the Kremlin, Putin told Macron that the goals of the Russian operation in Ukraine – demilitarization and its neutral status – would be achieved in any case, according to Reuters.
Putin said any attempt by Kiev to delay the talks would result in Moscow adding more elements to its list of demands.
Macron: “You made a big mistake in Ukraine”
French President Emmanuel Macron told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he had made a “big mistake” in Ukraine, that he had delusions about the government in Kyiv, and warned him that the war would cost Russia dearly in the long run, according to a French official.
In a telephone conversation that began with Putin on Thursday, the Russian leader reiterated his determination to achieve the neutralization and disarmament of Ukraine, either diplomatically or by arms, the French official said, as reported by Reuters.
“There was nothing in what President Putin said that could reassure us,” he said, adding that Putin had reiterated his commitment to “de-Naziizing Ukraine.”
“You are lying to yourself,” Macron told Putin, according to the official. “It will cost your country dearly, your country will end up isolated, weakened and under sanctions for a very long time,” he warned.
