Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (5) that Brazil, China and India could act as mediators in possible peace negotiations in the war with Ukraine.
Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin suggested that a preliminary agreement reached between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in the first weeks of the war at talks in Istanbul, which was never implemented, could serve as a basis for the negotiations.
The president also stressed that Russia has never refused peace negotiations with Ukraine.
Russia’s state-run RIA news agency said on Thursday, citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, that Russia does not see any prerequisites for peace talks with Ukraine at the moment.
Peskov also said that Russian authorities were not discussing a new mobilization, the TASS news agency reported.
Peace negotiations “on long pause”
In August, Russia announced it would put peace talks with Ukraine “on a long pause” after Ukrainians launched a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region last week.
“With the terrorist actions in the Kursk area, Ukraine has, at the very least, put peace negotiations on hold for a long time,” Russian Foreign Ministry Special Envoy Rodion Miroshnik said at a press conference on the 14th.
Miroshnik said he believed Ukraine’s incursion was done “deliberately” to stall negotiations.
Peace efforts have long since failed. Russia has called on Ukraine to give up four of its eastern regions, something Kiev finds unacceptable.
The exact purpose of Ukraine’s attack on Kursk is still unclear, but there is speculation that Ukraine may be seeking a position of greater influence if negotiations take place.
